Chemical Nickel: the Best Anti-Corrosive
Materials and Treatments — By Gladys on 7 April 2007 at 10:17 am
In order to avoid the oxidation of the metal parts of the checking fixtures – that is, fixations, supports, clips, etc – , an infinity of solutions are available regarding superficial finishings; yet, one of the most efficient ones as for quality, functionnality and aspect is “chemical nickel”. The Chemical Nickel overlap consists of an alloy of Nickel (90%) and phosphorus (10%).
It is chemically applied, since one of its main characteristics is the alloy uniformity, maintaining thus the tolerances of all the treated areas. As for checking fixtures, a 5-micron layer can be sufficient for the functionnality needed from them, so that it will only have a minimal impact on the manufacturing tolerances. As a non-porous product, it is highly resistant to corrosion and mainly triggers:
Chemical Nickel deposits can be applied on all types of surfaces, be them metallic or not: aluminiums, alloy steels, copper, bronze and special alloys.
Companies such as Elhco (Barcelona, Spain), Tecnocrom Industrial (Barcelona) and Acabados Superficiales Berritzen (Bizkaia), carry out the application of this superficial treatment by chemical nickel. Three types of chemical nickel baths can be applied according to the characteristics demanded for the overlap.
High content of phosphorus ( 10-14 %):
Maximal resistance to corrosion, hardness from 500-600 HV.
Average content of phosphorus ( 6-8 %):
For non-ferrous alloys, high hardness up to 1000HV.
Teflon Nickel( NI-PTFE ):
Nickel deposits with 25% of teflon, a very low friction coefficient, and an excellent resistance to wear and tear.
The chemical nickel overlap is used with excellent results in a lot of industrial sectors: electronics, electrical components, petrochemicals, automotive, textile, plastic injection moulds (PVC), and so on. The main applications of this overlap can be found in the plastic industry: extrusion machines, plastic injection, and mainly in the moulding industry, by facilitating the removal of the part from the mould and thus decreasing the risk of deformation of the part due to an adherence during the removal process. The teflon nickel overlap can also protect refrigeration water pipes from corrosion and thus improve the heat distribution.
